New Mutual Funds

Dozens are new mutual funds are rolled out every quarter. Investment companies create new funds when popular mutual funds are full, when they want to create an investment vehicle with a different objective or strategy, or they want to capitalize on a new trend. For example, a new mutual fund with a philanthropic twist allows investors to donate to charity a significant portion of the fees typically paid for managing the fund.

Rating companies like Morningstar will often have information on new mutual funds. Sine their rating system focuses on past performances, they will not have a rating for the new mutual funds.

If there are certain investment companies you regularly follow, such as Fidelity or Vanguard, follow their e-newsletters and their websites for announcements of new mutual funds. Business periodicals like the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Smart Money and others will also announce some new mutual funds.

Investing in new mutual funds is something of a gamble, even if the new mutual fund is with the same company as other mutual funds you own. The manager of every new mutual fund has it s own objectives, strategy and risk. Investing in new mutual funds may be a good addition to your investment portfolio, but should always be balanced by longer-term, proven mutual funds. Ideally, most of your funds should be ones that have performed well across different market cycles.
