Energy mutual funds invest solely in energy stock such as oil, oil service, gas, solar energy, and coal companies and makers of energy-saving devices. With more than three quarters of investors concerned that global warming will bring about major changes in their lifetime or the lifetime of their children, more investors are growing interested in energy mutual funds
There are about 100 different energy mutual funds to choose from. You can invest in either conventional energy sources or alternative energy sources. Of those, only a handful are alternative energy mutual funds. Both types of energy mutual funds are diversified. Alternative energy mutual funds make investments in alternative energy companies like wind, solar, and biomass. But they also invest in energy support industries like batteries, flywheels, special materials, and much more.
Conventional energy mutual funds are usually composed of oil, gas, coal, and nuclear fuel in the form of uranium. They make oil company investments, but they also invest in gas, coal, and in supporting energy services like drilling companies, drilling rig manufacturers, and more.
As with any mutual fund, energy mutual funds are not without risks. Decide how much you're ready to invest and how much risk you want to take, if energy mutual funds are your investment choice.
