If you wish to do some background checking, the SEC is the official watchdog for mutual funds and has information about each fund and its manager. The mutual fund manager, also known as portfolio manager, invests and trades the fund's underlying securities, realizing capital gains or losses and passing any proceeds to the individual investors. Ideally, a mutual funds manager is well-trained in analyzing company financial statements, reviewing industry literature and evaluating company and competitor strategies.

Compared to other fields, the gap between the star investment manager and the average one, over long periods, typically is small. Consequently, the resources and capabilities of the parent company should be as important in your selection of which funds to invest in.
